Sarasota at a Glance

Just a quick post to let everyone know I'm still alive and breathing.

School has been quite hectic the past couple of weeks, but I'm enjoying the work. Everyone is so creative and talented. It truly is humbling to be working with such an amazing group of young artists and teachers. A majority of the time, I don't feel qualified to be gaining instruction from such incredible professors. Their knowledge of the art and design world is so extensive, I am beyond grateful to be one of their pupils.

Here's a look at my home away from home. It's a stunning view at sunset, but venture out anytime between 12-4 and you will probably melt faster than a popsicle. Can't wait for the fall and winter months to come.

Dorm Decor Ideas

After I posted my dorm pictures on Facebook, I had a few people contact me about how I decorated such a small space. I intended to be somewhat social today, but considering the black rain clouds outside my window, I am confined to my dorm. Seems to be the perfect opportunity to share some of my decor ideas with you.

Most of the items in my dorm were DIY or souvenirs that I collected over the years. The things I did actually purchase were mainly from T.J. Maxx, Target and Tuesday Morning.

First item of interest; my bed canopy. My mom picked this gorgeous tapestry up at Tuesday Morning. It was made in India and the material is from an old sari. The fabric was light enough that I was able to buy adhesive hooks and two curtain rods and hang the fabric from the ceiling.

Second item of interest was my vintage looking map. Believe it or not, I bought this map brand new for $7.99. This map, and others like it, are sold at Target and Office Max. The map really adds a nice texture to the white wall. All that's  needed are poster adhesives.

My bed has a built in bookshelf behind it, which is perfect for showcasing souvenirs and pictures. I chose to display my Chinese doll (I bought her in either Beijing or Hong Kong), a box of tea I purchased while in London, and ornate picture frames.

Speaking of London, to spice up an old piece of furniture, I used mod-podge and collaged my London souvenir tickets and maps on the surface. Not only was this simple, but it gave the table a new look, without spending the big bucks.

My small items were in need of some organizing, so I purchased this flamboyant cake stand at T.J. Maxx, to keep my smaller accessories in one place.

Hanging paper stars made a hug difference in brightening up the window space. Again, I used adhesive hooks (those things really are life savers). If you would want more color by the window, try paper lanterns in different colors and sizes.

I owe it all to Pinterest on this one. Ladies, may I present the perfect solution for your makeup problems. No one wants to wake up early for classes and rummage through a makeup bag. To solve this, I found this DIY on Pinterest. All that's needed is a magnetic board and adhesive magnetic strips to stick to the back of your makeup. I hung the magnetic frame on the side of my dresser for convenience.

My dorm was originally a hotel, built in the 1920's. The dorm rooms all have wood floors, however, it's a bit cold on the feet in the morning. Easiest solution is a bright colored rug. This one is from T.J. Maxx.

Lastly, we can't forget about posters. They're light weight, add color and can change a room in an instant.

Hope some of these ideas were helpful. Let me know if you use any of them when decorating your dorm or have different ideas for decorating!

The Great Kate Wait...Is Over

What is it about the British Monarchy that we adore so greatly? Perhaps, it is the fact that they represent a class and standard that has existed for hundreds of years and has become somewhat of a historic symbol. Perhaps, the real-life, fairytale story of a commoner marrying her Prince Charming enchants us. Or, perhaps, it is Prince Charming's younger brother; dashing and, shall we say, a bit of a party boy, who captivates us and keeps us on our toes. No matter the reason, people around the world look to the British Monarchy today for good reason; because the future ruler of England has just made his way into the world.
In honor of the new heir to the British throne, I thought it appropriate to celebrate with a hot cup of tea while glancing through one of the Kate Middleton books I picked up in London.  Congratulations to both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the new baby.
No need to be discouraged, ladies. We still have Prince Harry.

My Home Away From Home | Personal

My home away from home: The Oster Farm. One of my favorite places to hang out and where I'm able to spend time with two of my best friends. Well, they're actually my adopted sisters...unofficially. But, I love them like my own family and I am blessed to have the entire Oster family in my life. I enjoy exploring the farm every chance I get, especially since a photo opportunity is usually close at hand. Here's a peak at a few members of the Oster clan, mostly the four-legged ones.
